The S/LAB Ultra Glide was designed for moderate-paced runners who spend 30 to 40 hours in their shoes. Feedback from these runners led to the analogy of water torture, where the repetitive impact over time causes mental and physical strain. It was determined that by altering the impact area, this discomfort could be reduced or eliminated. Systems and techniques to adjust foot positioning during long races were researched, drawing inspiration from wooden bead seat covers and foot massage machines.
